Web 2.0 - I'm drowning

How do people stay on top of all of the emerging technologies??? I've spent over 4 hours in front of the computer today and I've only barely scratched the surface.

I'm trying to understand how Twitter might by useful.  I'm msmolly27 on Twitter if you are interested in joining me there. I've been on Twitter for a couple of months, but I'm still not sure how it will be professionally useful.  The people I follow do post some good links, but I also read many of their blogs where they also share that information. Do I need to follow them on Twitter, too?

I've heard a lot about the potential value of Second Life to educators, so I joined that today. I am Martha227 Bookmite in Second Life, but so far I can only run across water. :-) If you can find me there and help this poor lost soul, it would be appreciated. I tried to teleport to Kathy Schrock's community, but didn't get there.  I don't know if it's my computer (a mac) or what.

At any rate, my teenagers are getting really annoyed by the amount of time I've spent on the computer today.  I would be giving them grief for spending four consecutive hours here, yet, I feel I have so much more to do. How do people like Will Richardson and Kathy Schrock manage to have regular lives while staying on top of technology?

I just took a class about web 2.0 last week and I'm learning that a lot of this new technology requires you as the librarian to put a lot more time outside of school into it. My teacher told us that sometimes you just have to let certain things go like making the beds.

Staying on top seems like a hopeless battle. I just try to keep my blog going because that has really been "my thing". I've also tried to promote blogging at school. I think if you got really comfortable with a blog, a wiki and a social bookmarking sites such as del.icio.us - then you could venture into other things later. I've got to run - but I have more ideas. I will comment later on tonight when I have more time. See you later!

Back again with a few more minutes.

I ran across this yesterday and plan to explore it further. It lists the top 3 or 4 web 2.0 tools for each category of tool. It looks like a great place to explore and feel that you are not lost in an endless sea of choices.

Also - I am just wondering.... Blogger is blocked by most schools in our area. I wonder if you might consider migrating your blog to edublogs.org?

I was happy to see my blog on your sidebar =)

Talk to you soon!

Don't be discouraged and don't try everything at once!!!! It is enough to discourage anyyone!

1. Here is a link to my Web 2.0 tools that I feel are useful for teaching and learning.
http://www.diigo.com/list/kathyschrock/web20tools

2. On Twitter-- a lot of things are getting said on Twitter and not showing up in the blogs. For those of us that post to our blogs, I wait until I have something that I feel is "valuable" to say. The power of Twitter is a huge community of educators who I can ask questions of or simply post an "a-ha", and also help answer the questions of others. It is replacing e-mail for me with my ed-tech colleagues.

3. The SLURL (Second Life URL) of Lighthouse Learning Island is: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Lighthouse%20Learning%20Island/6/134/24 Simply click on this URL, and your SL client will open, and you will be tranported magically to Lighthouse Learning Island!

And I have a life, really! I am, however, terminally left-brained as those who know me well can attest!

Take care!

Hi. I read your post on LMNet and followed it to your blog. Nice work and good luck on finding a job. This is what I do to keep a little footing on the avalanche of tools I find. I subscribe to several blogs whose purpose is to reveal new tools - the one I like best is Jane'e E-Learning Pick of the Day . If I can think of a classroom idea for the new tool, I post it in my blog. I only post those tools for which I can think of an idea. That is my filter. Posting the tool secures it in my memory a bit. I use my blog as a memory parking spot for myself!

I use Twitter like a post-it-note. When I happen to be browsing around looking at professional things online or in books, I'll usually leave a quick note in Twitter. It serves two or three purposes from my point of view. If I don't have time to look further into a resource right then, I can go to Twitter for a quick reminder that I want to get back to it. Second, I often forget about cool sites I have used. Again, Twitter is a good reminder. And last, it may be that others who are following me might find a resource mentioned there that they can use.

Why do I not use my blog for this?
I don't have the personality to post frequently or reliably to my blog, and when I do I feel like I don't have anything valuable to say given the number of better library blogs that are out there. Plus, I have exactly one active follower of my blog. My blog is at
http://library_musings.livejournal.com.
if you want to have a look, but I really wouldn't advise you to bother. I think my Tweets are the place where I'm more useful.

Another good use of Twitter just occurred to me. I can never keep track of reminders I jot down on real-life post-it-notes at work. I may start Twittering those too. Probably blocked by the firewall, but my cell phone has Internet access and may work.

Anyway, those are my thoughts on the subject.

Hi Jacquie,

Can you explain the process of migrating a blog? Will I lose everything?

Thanks,
